Magoha previously served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi from 2005 until 2015. He was a Professor of Surgery at the University of Nairobi’s College of Health Sciences. Magoha was born in Kisumu on 2 July 1952. He moved in with his older brother, John Obare and his wife Agatha Christine Obare, in Nairobi, on account of his [Magoha] asthma, at a young age.
Magoha attended Dr David Livingstone Primary School, in Nairobi. He then attended Starehe Boys’ Centre and School, where he completed his O-Level studies. He proceeded to Strathmore School, for his A-Level education, graduating with a High School Diploma.
Magoha was awarded a scholarship to study human medicine at the University of Lagos, in Nigeria. His studies took him through the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the University College Hospital, Ibadan, both in Nigeria and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital in London, United Kingdom. He was trained as a urologist and was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Career
Magoha established his career in surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital as an intern and rose to the position of Senior Resident and Clinical Lecturer in Surgery.
He also served as a lecturer in the same hospital and a Consultant Surgeon in various leading hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria.
He joined the University of Nairobi as a lecturer in Urological Surgery in 1988 and rose through the ranks to become a full Professor of Surgery in 2000.
He served in various administrative positions at the university, rising from chairperson of the Academic Department of Surgery in 1999, Dean of the School of Medicine, Principal of the College of Health Sciences, Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance to Vice-Chancellor in January 2005 after a competitive recruitment process.
He is published in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and supervised to completion more than 40 Master of Medicine (Surgery) students.
He is a member of many professional bodies in Urology and Surgery including British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS), Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), among others.
He was actively involved in research in male erectile dysfunction, prostate, testicular and penile cancers, circumcision and HIV/AIDs.
His most remarkable achievement at the UoN were instituting discipline among the academic staff, non-teaching staff and the students, and revamping the management of the university by achieving performance targets he was given prior to being appointed. At the time he assumed office, apparently staff members never worked, lecturers missed classes and some even lost student examination marks. Student strikes were notoriously common and had damaged the institution’s reputation.
By meeting openly with students to discuss their issues, he created a safety valve for ventilation and preventing them from rioting. For the 10 years he served as the vice chancellor, the students went on strike fewer times than before his time in office.
In 2016, with his record as a no-nonsense education administrator, he was appointed the Chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council, by President Uhuru Kenyatta. His immediate task as the Chairman of KNEC was to reform the council to arrest the widespread academic dishonesty and corruption in the administration of national examinations. He is credited to have dismantled cartels that had propagated exam cheating for years and restored credibility of exams in Kenya.
On 1 March 2019, he was nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for Education in the Kenyan Cabinet,[13] and was sworn in on 26 March 2019, replacing Amina Mohamed, who was transferred to the Sports docket.
George Magoha joined Maseno University in Kisumu County as a professor of surgery to the School of Medicine on 17 January 2023 and was due to start his new role.
Death
Magoha died following a suspected cardiac arrest at the Nairobi Hospital, on 24 January 2023, aged 70.[16] He had collapsed at home before being rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed after efforts to resuscitate him were futile.
Magoha was known as a tough-talking and no-nonsense during his tenure at the Ministry of Education, where he served at the helm as a Cabinet Secretary.
Achievements
Magoha was the author of a book, Tower of Transformational Leadership, published by Kenway Publications in 2017. It is an autobiographical account of his experience as a leader in various roles in medicine, surgery, academia and the community. As of May 2017, he was the chairman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
Magoha is also celebrated for playing a key role in transforming the education sector both as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi and during his tenure at the Minister of Education.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Professionally, I am a top grade Professor of Urological and Transplant Surgery since 2000 at the University of Nairobi trained in Nigeria, Ghana, Ireland and United Kingdom. I am further trained in Executive Management at Stanford University. My cutting edge original research on prostate, penile, and testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction and circumcision among others continue to positively impact on my international colleagues and Global thematic area.
Administratively, I am a firm hands on and results oriented transformative
leader practicing professionalism, team work and team spirit rather than command and control. I have ten years’ experience as Vice Chancellor University of Nairobi having been the very first public servant to be competitively appointed in January 2005 in Kenya. I formed a synergistic team based entirely on merit and ability to produce results completely devoid of ethnic considerations. As team leader we formulated the first ever strategic plan for the University of Nairobi which was revised twice during my tenure. This formed the basis of complete reorganization of all University systems commencing with prudent computerized financial management, right sizing of units, staff, students, ISO certification, Rapid Result Initiatives (RRI), Performance Contracting, formulation and implementation of various University policies and the mainstreaming of Research and Innovation and Student Affairs among many others. Strict financial, staff, and student discipline together with various operational strategies resulted in the smooth running of the University for ten years of my stewardship without loss of time for the first time in history. At national level as chairman of Vice Chancellors
Committee I dealt with national academic and staff labour issues through Inter University Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) of the Federation of Kenya Employers. Professionally I have been a member of the Medical practitioners and Dentists Board since 1999 and Chairman since 2009 to date.
During this period I established extensive international Academic and Management Linkages and Networks having visited over one hundred Universities during the ten years as Vice Chancellor. This Transformative leadership resulted in the increased visibility and internationalization of the university which has been top in the region for several years and was number 7 in Africa and 855 in the world according to Webometrics Rankings of January 2015 at the completion of my term as Vice Chancellor.
Internationally my leadership qualities were recognized by the Association of African Universities (AAU) where I have been the longest serving member of the Governing Board in history 2005 to 2017, Vice President and President, member of the Global Council of Confucius Institute representing Africa in Beijing China where again am the longest serving member , Chairman of African Network for Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) Governing Board from 2010 to present and President of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa (AMCOA) from 2013 to date.
I am an avid fund raiser with a direct individual track record of over 500 million Shillings towards infrastructure development of the College of Health Sciences and Main Campus, and collectively several billions with other colleagues for research at the College of Health Sciences. I also hold several Presidential, Medical Professional, Academic & International Honors and Awards
Prior to being appointed the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, I
served as Chairman of the academic Department of Surgery, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. During this period, I fundraised internationally to construct and furnish the current Dean’s Office, and the Principal’s Office including the College Committee room. The funds were also used to refurbish and furnish the College boardroom and Registry at the College of Health Sciences. I also later served as Principal of the College and Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration and Finance.

The success of the Croatian national soccer team cannot be called accidental, as its leaders have been playing in the strongest European championships and clubs for many years. Here it is more interesting the fact of successful games in the World Cup, as they managed to reach the semifinals at least three times, while at the Euros the statistics are not so pleasant. In addition to the presence of famous players, there is another interesting feature – the successful statistics of penalty kicks. After looking at the last football results of the team, it turns out that it almost never concedes anyone in the penalty shootout. And this is proof not only of skill, but also of iron stamina.
Since 2008, Croatia has failed to go to extra time only once in all major tournaments. And five times the team has had to take a penalty kick to determine the winner. The loss was in 2008 at the Euros, and there has been some magic ever since. There have already been several examples of how, in a knowingly lost match, the team was able to reach the penalty shootout and beat the favorite. Reasons for Croatia’s good penalty shootout series
Croatia’s winning streak in the penalty shootout begins in 2018, and as of 2023, it is still an unbeaten record with four consecutive penalty shootout victories over their opponents. The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has completed the process of placing candidates who had applied for Degree, Diploma and artisan certificate courses.
The Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has officially released The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) report on the completion of placement process for candidates who had applied for different courses after the first and second revision were done.

The 2018 Candidates are expected to be admitted to different higher institutions of learning for the 2019/2020 September Intake.
A total of 89,486 students were placed to degree programmes in public and private universities and a total of 98,393 applicants were placed to the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes for diploma, craft and artisan certificates.
KUCCPS portal will be open starting from May 1, 2019 for students who wish to transfer their placement. This procedure is only applicable for students who have been admitted for government sponsored programmes.
